The main problem with the used IPhone idea is that its neither an off the shelf or a large scale solution. I mean, say some newly blind person needs a GPS. Now they need to go onto ebay and hope to find a used IPhone that isn't damaged? What about some group like Leader Dogs that needs hundreds of units a year? I'm not saying Leader Dogs would start handing out IPods and bluetooth GPS receivers now that the Kapten Plus is gone. But an off the shelf solution is way better than having to find used parts.

I looked at the prices of used IPhones on Amazon before deciding to buy an IPod Touch. The cheapest used IPhones were only a few dollars less than a new IPod Touch. Some were more expensive. Many were scratched or damaged. And then you have the risk of buying a used device off the internet.

I would like to be able to put together a blog that says buy this from Apple, and this from newegg, and then do this and you are done.

Truely, the best thing yet would be if Apple would add a GPS receiver to the IPod Touch. They do make an IPad with a built in GPS receiver but its $600 (IIRC) and its about twice the size of the IPod Touch. Its not designed to be carried around in your pocket. Plus, I think that asking Apple to redesign a device is going too far. Adding a feature to the operating system is nothing especially since there is already code out there to do it. I am not sure people are aware of this but Apple operating systems are built upon open source software.

but generally, they are in the same ballpark unless they are damaged. And buying used is a p

Think I would rather havea used IPhone with the built in GPS and better camera.

Well, its not directly an accessibility issue -- unless you include cost as
part of accessibility. If they included a GPS bluetooth stack in IOS, it
would bring down the cost of a talking GPS by more than half. A Trekker or
an iPhone (including the boice phone plan) is going to cost you $600 - $700.
An iPod Touch is only $200.

I think it is not an accessibility issue but a good idea for them to do it
or for someone to find a way to use the current bt module in ios for this
purpose. After all, if it can be used for headphones and keyboards, why not
gps receivers.

I wonder if a gps receiver could be designed with an app which had the
support for it.

All,

I think we should politely ask Apple to include a bluetooth GPS stack in
IOS. If you could pair a bluetooth GPS with an iPod, you could get a talking
GPS for under $200. That's cheaper even than the Kapten Plus used to be.

I think we should all email accessibility@xxxxxxxxx to suggest this. What do
you think?
