I'm pretty sure that Julie said it was a woman. At first Julie referred to 
her as a 'they', but then later she [Julie] referred to her [the teacher] 
as a "her" [the teacher]: "I'm thinking the Language Arts teacher may have 
plied her way with tissues."

The decision where to put that period was mind-bending -- refer to rule 
3.2.1.a of Mutton Handbook of Style.
