It's still possible to send a hard copy telegram. I sent a birthday telegram to my cousin in Idaho, earlier this month, via the Western Union website.

very cool. we often discuss telegrams in Silicon Valley. i didn't know these could even be sent anymore.


a friend in Washington DC tells me that State Dept still uses telegrams, not email, for their communications. when a telegram arrives, an intern picks it up, walks it to the Secretary of State (some whose name I can't remember). when he has read it, the intern then walks it to the Under-Secretary of State, and on down the line, one by one, walking all the way. the bureaucracy is mired somewhere in the late 1940s.
