i've been reading about nelson's navy
there's maybe a lesson in the fact that only one man--nelson himself--was thought worth pickling
being put in a brandy barrel
carried all the way home
and then toasted
in his own fluids' splice

today's challenges
piffling household things like the
anonymous blunting of knives
or electrical connections working loose at the most absurd times
or stamps which climb behind drawers
and slip like thieves in hiding
the determination of scarves and gloves
to scatter themselves like dirty dishes or mail
those semi-suicidal appliances
and household inhabitants with chromosonal allergies to garbage
all these
just ballast our daily desires
ground us
help us
in our passages

and when they're no longer wanted on the voyage
we should wrap them like stiffs
in biodegradable canvas kit bags
and drop them in very deep waters
weighed down with shot

they simply cannot be allowed to pollute
to bob upon the ocean
to muck up the grog
