inside the cheap Arco station
where cash only is the golden rule
and the till records no transactions
my mental scan runs as follows

first up towards the closed circuit cameras
then down the mountain stack of eighteen-pack beers
roving over Nickel ads to cerulean blue hue slurpees
manly baccy chew, terryaki beef jerky
multi-colored energy vitamins in individual packs
Little Debbies

on each side of the exit door
there are yardsticks for robbers
taller than four foot four

challenged by the smell of popcorn butter substitute
and slightly warm slow-rolling dogs
we customers stand erect, quiet as fresh soldiers
waiting for the enemy's numbers to come up

at Waterloo say
waiting to pay
