Robert: I can remember, honest, when TV stations SIGNED OFF
THE AIR around midnight, certainly by 1:00 a.m. Maybe in New
York or Kansas City there were all night stations, but not
where I was.
I remember that as a child. WCBS New York remained on all
night, but the other stations did a sign off.
The signoff was a miniature apocalypse: *first a brief sermon urging the faithful to repent *then the Star Spangled Banner played *then a picture of an American Indian in a bullseye *then white noise and howling static.
