Real quick. There is no way to talk about religion except to talk in circles. It is faith, faith, and more faith. Unless you're saying that the Creator didn't hand down spiritual guidelines or laws (the Ten Commandments, turn the other cheek, etc. etc.). If that's what you're saying, then how can you be Jewish or have any religion? Hence the talking in circles. I don't know what the concept of Chosen People is except that I 'know' that the Jews were Chosen. To choose is transitive. It is done by something of something. Again, it's the religious ball of circular wax. It's why I don't imbibe. It's also why Joseph Campbell gave it all up too except as interesting myths. Really, gotta go. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: lit-ideas@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 8/28/2006 10:35:55 AM Subject: [lit-ideas] Re: One fewer god You're talking in circles, Irene. If a group of people was given a particular set of spiritual guidelines and set aside from others, it must have been by a Creator. If you do not believe in a Creator, you cannot believe in "chosen people" -- there is no one to have done the choosing. I highly recommend Joseph Campbell's "Power of Myth" book to you. (Btw, the conception of "Chosen People" among most people I've run into is very different from the Jewish notion of being "chosen".) Still, the Chosen People are chosen by ... God? Either God or man, there is no one else, right? We follow God's word in the Bible, correct? So therefore, by extension, Judaism is God given? Christianity is, I guess, also God given in that God gave his only son to mankind. Anyway, I gotta go. But actually I was asking dosflounder whomever he or she is (fresh people to the list are good) because he/she seemed to have some education on the matter. I have read plenty on the subject but was interested in his/her take. (Btw, "give Judaism to the Jews" is a meaningless phrase.) I understand secularists, but be intelligent about it.
