Does bios recognise their size correctly ? You have your drives, IDE line 1 with hda+hdb , master/slave ? IDE line 2 with cdrom+hdd, master/slave ? You attempted to install a linux OS on one of the linux partitions on hda ? Did you create any other partitions for that OS, ie /home, /swap ? If you had the choice, would you prefer to have a dualboot W98/Linux, or all linux box ? During installation , especially in hardware detection(the early part of the install procedure) did you receive any warning messages. During the various install procedures were there any warning messages ? The installer installed a bootmanager ? Have you tried the floppy disc you ought to of created during the install ? Do you get a linux bootloader flash screen , if so, have you tried failsafe ? There are many options available to you yet before you need to write linux off. The reason I ask about dual booting with W98(which you obviously are familliar with) is that it is surprisingly easy to install a linux OS together with windblows, and then at least you do have a working OS for the time being, plus if you find yourself in a position where you are having problems getting a piece of equipement to work, and you may need for instance to import a file via that device then you can import it in W98 and transfer it across to linux.
