Oliver,

The Carbon Fiber (CF) tripods are reputed to be sturdier and to dampen vibrations better than metal tripods, whether aluminum or steel. The film/video industry has endorsed CF in a big way.

I personally use a small Gitzo CF 1228 with a Gitzo shoulder strap, for carrying long distances and in crowds. I mainly use it for my M6s but it is sturdy enough for use, and sometimes is used, with my Hasselblad. Bob Adler uses one as his main Hasselblad tripod. I think maybe Frank Filippone uses one as well. With the strap, it is very easy to carry.

I also have a Gitzo CF 1349, which is a much larger CF tripod that I use for Hasselblad and 4x5 work. It is still much much lighter than any of my old steel Gitzos and Manfrottos. Or Tiltall for that matter. And I do find CF as sturdy, if not sturdier.

Manfrotto also makes CF tripods. I bought my Gitzos ten to fifteen years ago when Gitzo was all that was available.

What a blessing, the invention of CF tripods!

Jim

For medical reasons I need to find a much lighter tripod without sacrificing
camera stability. Each of my two field tripods - an ancient Tiltall and a
5-year old Bogen Manfrotto - weighs about 7 pounds including a 3-axis head
with reasonably long handles. (I do not like to use a ballhead.)
Each tripod extends high enough to bring an M6 to eye level when needed;
neither has a cranked center post.
The Tiltall's legs spread at only one angle. Each of the Manfrotto's legs
can be locked at one of 3 angles, and the clamp-type leg extension locks are
much more suitable for working in sand than the Tiltall's twist locks.
I shall be grateful for suggestions and/or recommendations based on personal
experience.
Oliver
