This is called "kerning" and more often helps than hurts, but it can do either. Proportional fonts can also provide less or more space per character, depending on the font. That's the problem; you don't have the right fonts. My copy of Juno 1.49/Windows 3.1 has a lot more fonts. Where I got them, I don't remember, but they are very handy, especially the bold fonts.
