Assume you have scanned for virus/malware problems? Do you have lots of programs loading at boot time. Time for a defrag? Check for hard disk problems? Although many caution against the use of Registry cleaners, I have found that they can be useful (used judiciously) in improving performance. After a Windows update, I never cease to be amazed at how many Registry errors are introduced which weren't there before the update.
