Hello Steve,

A similar thing happened too me when I first turned on my dell computer. 
Here's what I did to fix that problem.  Try reseating the sound card 
backinto the computer, and then try playing a music c d.  or better yet, 
after performing the above step, turn the computer back and listen for the 
log on windows music.  If you hear the log on music for windows, then things 
shoould work properly for you.  hope my suggestion helps.
