Status line in Microsoft Outlook is similar except you do not have to go
to "layout" from the "view" menu.
Status bar is right there on the View menu.

Outlook Express' status bar has nothing to do with Windows display
properties, which had been addressed in prior messages. To show OE's
status bar:
1. Press Alt V for the view menu.
2. Press down arrow to Layout. Press enter to open it.
3. Press tab to move to a check box labeled status bar. Make sure it is
checked.
4. Press enter to exit the dialog box.

My guess is that this check box was never checked, or was checked at one
time and chenged.
