Rick, you don't have to apologize. You just missed an earlier message in
which Judith assured us that she'd already checked things like that
carefully before requesting input from the list.

By the way, just for the sake of clear communications, I'd like to mention
that Judith's subject line here represents the proper name for this screen
element, though some people get it confused. It's the status *line* and it
appears at the bottom of the screen in a number of other applications, such
as Word. It's a thin space across the bottom of the screen containing
information. In word, for instance, you'd find things about the position of
the cursor, the line, the page, and a few other things. In Outlook Express,
it gives information about whatever is active on the screen, such as how
many items are in the Inbox, how many of them are new, etc. If you press
Alt, it will describe the function of the menu you've selected. That sort of
thing.

the term "bar," by contrast, is used only to identify the Task Bar, a
Windows feature that isn't a thin line with information, but a screen area
that's part of the Desktop and can be accessed at other times as well,
depending how it's been set up. It holds the program icons of the running
programs, and extends to the right of the Start button at the base of the
start menu. Though it can be resized to be a very broad band or a narrow
one, it is never thought of or referred to as a "line."

Hope that helps. It's simply useful to make clear distinctions when
possible in order to clarify this sort of thing under discussion.

Judith,

Could status bar in OE possibly have become unchecked? From the
message list Hit alt-v for the view menu, then arrow down or up until
you get to layout, and hit enter. Arrow down or up until you get to
status bar and hit the space bar if it is unchecked. Escape to leave
the menu.

    Hope this helps,

Margaret

Along with the other OE problems I have been experiencing this week I
can no longer read the status line while in the program. Until very
recently jaws key plus the number 3 on the numerical keypad gave me
infor mation such as;
the number of new messages
the number of unread messages
receiving mail
sending mail

Now I ge information concerning my task bar such as the names of
documents that are on it. Does anyone have a solution to this
problem? Thanks, Judith
