Did I totally miss something?
Insert+8 on the number pad has always been insert+Up arrow. This is the
keystroke to read the current line. You should be able to accomplish the

same thing with insert +up arrow key on the upside down t on the
keyboard. 
What does this have to do with reading selected text?
The keystroke to read selected text is shift+insert+down arrow.
