I can't speak for you, but I think because most of us keep JAWS in tye system tray we made an assumption. You tell me, why have you been telling her to hit insert+j?

hi. Ok, in other words, when JAWS is *not* running in the system tray, and the JAWS window is on the screen, do not hit alt plus j. Instead, hit your alt key. When you do this, the first item that should pop up is options. If it doesn't, move your up arrow key until you hear options. then, press enter. You should then hear basics... and then, press enter again. This is where you can adjust how JAWS runs. So check the appropriate box to get JAWS to run in the system tray and then press ok. Then, restart JAWS and your changes will take effect. Don't forget to restart JAWS, that's important!!!!

Judith. Inser J. Now you hear Options. That is the first thing you hear. It has a submenu. Enter or right arrow to bring that up. Now Arrow up and down to see what's there, and press Enter on Basics.

Daniel, I can't get to basics, that's the problem. When I have th jaws window open on the desktop I can't tab or arrow around to find anything. That's the problem. Judith,

You hear the three dots after the word Basics? That means there's a
submenu
to open. Hit Enter. Then use your up and down arrow keys. Please
try
this.

Yardbird, I understand about the retina, that's where my visual problem stems from. Can you tell me how to get to basics? I brought the jaws window up with jaws key j and then tried accessing it through the desk
top.
Both times I got the window but couldn't arrow around in the box to
get to
basics. Judith

Well, thanks. I can see in my blurry way that the program interface
is
on
the screen, but I can't see clearly enough with my central vision
(the
part
of the retina we use for reading, seeing faces, etc., none of which
I
can
do) to see that the shark logo is decorating it. So when Judith
referred
only to the logo, and didn't just say that the Main Jaws interface
window
was what she meant, I didn't know what to think.

the JAWS logo is a shark. it appears in the main window when the window
is
actually on the screen, instead of the system tray.

I'm confused. Judith referred to seeing a jaws logo on the screen.
I
imagined that to be some sort of company design. Are you saying
that
what
she's seeing is the Jaws main interface and its menus? it just
seems
fair
to explain that this isn't decorative, but the basic interface of
the
program, and *then* to explain that the program can be run like her
other
applications, so that it's always available the way Word is, or
made to
run
in the system tray, where it won't be seen unless called up from
the
system
tray or by pressing Insert J.

Now, if a logo like a shark is what's on the screen, that's a
different
matter, of course...

Hi Judith

Ok, do the following to get rid of the JAWS window on the screen,
if
you
haven't figured this out already on your own doing some searching.
go to your JAWS window and go to options, and then basics...
when you press enter here, you'll get a dialogue box with a few
checkboxes.
the one you want to check is, run JAWS from system tray. Check
this
box.
then go through the options and set things how you want them. If
you're
unsure of what an item in the list is, press insert plus f1 and
you'll
hear
a description of the current item and what it does. then press ok.

Ok, now you should be bak at your regular JAWS window again. To
get
JAWS
to run in your system tray which will keep the JAWS window off the
screen
but still running, you'll need to unload JAWS with insert plus f4
and
then
restart JAWS. By default, JAWS puts a desktop icon for itselfon
your
desktop, so before you hit alt plus f4 to restart, press windows
key
plus
m
and then press j until you hear JAWS 7.0
Ok, now do your insert plus f4 to lose JAWS and then press ok to
close
it. Now if you're focused on the desktop icon for JAWS 7, which
you
should
be, just wait a few seconds, and then press enter. In a few
seconds,
JAWS
should load up again, and then you should be able to access
everything
in
your JAWS menu a little easier with insert j. it'll pop up your
different
JAWS menu items in a context menu.

Hope this helps.

That's what I had read--there is a separate version for

As
I
have said, I should have gone to the web site to verify this
first.
Thanks
for that, Chris.

hi There is *most definitely* a version of JAWS 7 for windows 98. In fact with the CD Judith has, the proper version is installed based on
the
operating system being used.
So she wouldn't need to ditch the cd and re-download it at
all,
the
cd
just
installs the proper version. nice!

Judith, I believe I read in the Jaws 7 release notes that

You can certainly have more than one version of Jaws on your
system
though--although I guess your ram capacity would bear on
that.
Also,
Version 7 is, I believe about 7 megs in size so we should
really
know
a
little more about your system before giving a definitive
answer.
I use the hot key combo control alt 5, control alt 6 and
control
alt
j
for
versions 5, 6 and 7 respectively.
I like version 7 best of all but so far I have not
experienced
many
of
the
problems others have spoken of.
I am quite certain though that version 7 is specifically not
recommended
for Windows 98.

I just went to the FS website and read of the new features.
Quite
honestly,
the spike feature discussed earlier this week would allow me
to
collect
material on the clipboard and paste it all when I was ready.
The
other
new
feature that allows for easier menu reading has never been a
problem
for
me.
One thing that I forgot to point out is that I'm working on
windows
98.
Would this pose a problem if I decided to install the
program?
Thanks,

Guys,

Really, now. One doesn't have to mutually exclude the
other?
I
think
it's
been noted countless times, you can upgrade but if
there
are
areas
where
things may not work right, it isn't a criminal offense
to
keep
the
older
version there as a fall-back.

Frankly, there's a lot that JFW 7 has to offer, and
I've
not
encountered
many of the problems that others have. Obviously,
there
are
differences
in
system performance due to different display adapters,
installed
drivers,
installed software and so forth. But, I find that JFW
7
performs
better
on
certain web pages and with certain forms; and other
additions
such
as
improved table formatting, MSN 7 support, the virtual
clipboard
feature,
firefox etc. are strong arguments to use 7 but have the
fallback
ability
to
your version of choice.

Quite to my surprise I just got a CD of Jaws 7 in the

As
I

Should
I
install the new jaws or stick with my jaws 5.1? Is it
as
easy
to
use
as
5.1? Thanks, Judith
