As I understand it, (and I haven't personally seen one), you have software
installed on your pc that when you open it, connects you to a network that
allows you to make phone calls over the internet. You connect to a specific
IP address, and you are connected to the phone company's network.

Today, we have a phone sitting on our desk. a line goes from our home to
the phone company's central office site and that site directs your call via
the phone company's network to its final destination. So, your home phone
is in a fixed location.

With a soft phone, one click of the mouse and you are connected to an IP
address on the internet. From there, you are connected to the phone
company's network which then routes your call to its final destination. So,
with a soft phone, your phone can travel with you on your notepad.
Presumably, you could be in Vancouver B.C., New York or somewhere in Spain
and it would all appear to be the same. I also presume that as the various
companies provide the service, your charges will not be based on the
distance of the call as they are today, but will be a monthly subscription
fee.

In my case, I work for a major phone company from my home. I sometimes have
to work from our head office. With a soft phone, I will be able to take my
phone with me on my pc. If I have to work from Toronto or Montreal for a
week, my office phone will be with me and, no long distance charges. ...Or,
if I have to work with my pc on my lap from my Lazyboy in the living
room...:)

They tell me that there are, of course, many more advantages with soft
phones. I will have to learn about them in the next little while.

I sent my original note with the hope that someone else out there in the
world may have already had exposure to them. So, if you have, please share
your experiences.

> IP phones... Has anyone had any exposure to soft phones? Do they cause
JAWS any particular problems? Do you need a second sound card independent
of the one JAWS is using? Anything I should be aware of before telling my
employer that I'll have one installed on my Dell notepad?
