Caroline,
That is strange that you have 512 MB and still have that kind of problem 
with gradual deterioration of computer performance especially while 
switching programs back and forth. And I take it that both machines you 
refer to have Windows XP or Windows 2000? These would have the least memory 
leakage of any of the operating systems. Perhaps someone on the board here 
can give you some idea of services you might turn off on those machines to 
help you free up some resources which might alleviate or even solve the 
problem.
