It isn't the auto formatting that you want to turn off.  You want to turn
off the "automatic bulleted lists" and "automatic numbered lists" under
"autoformat as you type."

1. open the tools menu
2. press ENTER on autocorrect
3. CTRL-TAB to "autoformat as you type" property sheet (be careful, there is
an autoformat property sheet too.)
4. uncheck the "automatic bulleted lists" and "automatic numbered lists"
options
5. press ENTER
