Rebecca:
Word is likely generating the numbers automatically, and as such, they
are probably being generated in a somewhat inaccessible part of the
screen. I suspect that you are trying to use the left and right arrows
to get to the numbers. You generally cannot do that. You have to use
one of the line reading commands such as read line or read from left of
cursor. You can route the mouse cursor (JAWS cursor) to the cursor and
use the mouse reading commands to get the JAWS cursor over the numbers.
I am not exactly sure how to convert the numbers to text in any elegant
way, but here are two quick and dirty ways to convert these
automatically generated numbers to text.
1. There may be automatic cross references too. To make sure they are
updated, highlight the entire file with control-a. Then, press Alt
Shift U (for "update"). Now, the cross references (if any) will be
correct, or should be.
2. Move your cursor to the top of the file. Then, press control-a
again to highlight everything.
3. With everything highlighted, press control-c to copy everything to
the clipboard.
4. Now, you have two options. One of these is sure fire. The other is
about 95% likely to work.
A. The sure fire strategy is to open either WordPad or HJ Pad. Both
create RTF files. After opening either, paste the clipboard contents
in, using control-v.
Now, you can simply review in either WordPad or HJ Pad, or you can copy
all the contents back into another Word document. Now, when you review
the file, the numbers will be real text and can be copied and pasted
like any other text.
  B. The slightly more elegant approach is to paste the clipboard
contents (from step 4 above) back into another Word Window. There is a
trick. DO NOT USE CONTROL-V. Instead use "paste special." After
following steps 1 through 4 above, press Alt-E followed by "S" to paste
special. Then choose either "unformatted text" or "unformatted Unicode
text." Either should produce a replica of your document albeit with
textual, instead of automatically generated, numbers.
Automatic numbering in MS Word can really be slick, but if you are
copying and pasting and trying to retain the numbering, they can also be
a pain.
Good luck.

Hi folks. I am working with a Word document that has automatically
generated numbers. JAWS can read the numbers when I read line by line
but not when I use the arrow keys.

This is even more obnoxious because I am reviewing this document and the
numbers are important. When I go to copy a particular title along with
its associated number, Word copies the title correctly but does not copy
the number correctly. This is very very bad since in this case (it's a
requirements document) the numbers are important.

Is there any way I can make this work?
