Which is true. But if you redefine M. to say monsieur, then you type M.123
jaws will say monsieur 123.

See the problem?

And modifying your example, what would happen in a sentence such as:

At the M.L.A. convention M. de Gaul ate a sandwich of peanutbutter and jam.
