To be honest, Katrina, I've never used Jaws with a laptop. What I was suggesting was that a change in the keyboard selection might solve your problem.

Hi Steve,

Hmmm, I chose to buy the numb pad so that I wouldn't have to use the laptop
keystrokes. As a result, I chose to use the desktop configuration. Are you
saying that choosing the laptop configuration will enable me to use the numb
pad as I normally do on my desktop? Or, are you saying that no matter what
I can't use the numb pad for JFW commands on a laptop? Earlier I chose to
select the laptop configuration, and didn't get any improvement, but I
didn't restart the computer. So, I will try that.

Thanks for your help,
Katrina

Okay, Katrina, one thing you might do is this:
See if you can get into your Jaws program with an alt-tab. Do an alt-o for
options, and you should land on the item called basics. Hit enter. You
should be in a series of checkboxes. Hit the tab key until it asks you what
type of keyboard you want to use. It normally defaults to desktop, but you
want to make sure that "laptop" is selected. Hit down arrow and you should
hear "laptop". Now tab until you hear "okay button". Hit enter on this,
restart your system, and see if you have better luck.

Subject: JFW 6.01 Problems On A New Sony Laptop

Hi All,

I have just installed JFW 6.01 on a new Sony VGN-S400 laptop, running
Windows XP Home, and have run into a couple of issues that I hope you can
help with.

I should mention that a wireless numb pad is combined with this unit.
Setting up the numb pad seemed simple, but perhaps I did something wrong.
Most things on the numb pad seem to work fine, but I am unable to use the
commands for reading current line, word, and character. I can't route
Jaws
to PC. I can't navigate in any fashion other than moving to the
previous/next character and up/down a line. I can't spell current words,
etc. Basically, it seems I can't do anything that combines the "Insert"
key
with something else. Do you have any suggestions/thoughts?

Another problem of immediate concern is the inability to know what a file
extension is. In the JFW training tutorial, he demonstrates going to a
file
with a RTF extension. I followed his steps exactly, but no extension was
heard. I bet somewhere an option is marked to hide extensions. I'm too
tired to hunt for that tonight, but will investigate it tomorrow.

I followed the instructions for configuring JFW to work with Windows XP
precisely, as presented in the Help documentation, and even
uninstalled/reinstalled JFW. Nothing I do helps. By the way, before
installing this software on the laptop, I easily and successfully
installed
it on a desktop computer running Windows 98 SE.

I look forward to any help you can provide.

Katrina
