Hi Yardbird,

Actually, the problem had nothing to do with the regular full scan since I have that scheduled for the middle of the night when I am sleeping.

However, the paid versions of these anti-virus programs have constant real-time protection, so having too much going at the same time can slow things down on your PC, particularly in an application like Microsoft Word. That is the reason that I shut down the anti-spyware portion of my NOD32 program, since I already have such protection with Spy Sweeper.

Things are working much better now.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

I don't understand. Is he saying that if he tries to work in Word while
antivirus program is running a virus scan, jaws slows down? I couldn't tell if that's what he means, or if he means that even while it's just running in
the sense of checking for incoming viruses in email or something, this
happens? Well, I sure don't think that just having my AVG Free installed and functioning (though not scanning) has been any impediment to Jaws in Word or
anywhere else. If I'm unaware that simply having an antivirus program
installed and active in its sort of sentry mode can have this effect, sorry.
I never heard about that.

But I can say one thing. On my Pentium 4 computer, which may not have the
fastest processor speed in the marketplace now that the computer's about
three years old, but certainly is no 8088, it's scarcely worth trying to do anything while AVG Free edition is actually running a virus scan for the 40
minutes or so it takes on my machine. During that time, enough system
resources are let go to actually function in Outlook express, Word or
anything else without having to wait a minute or two for audible feedback so
seldom that I don't even bother. After someone on this list, or maybe a
couple of folks, said that they'd disabled the automatic daily scheduled
scan and just ran it manually once a week or so, I decided to live
dangerously and try the same approach, like starting the scan when I'm
leaving home for a while or going to bed. And so far, so good, no
catastrophes. And no more sitting at the computer trying to function on it
despite the scan being in progress and getting very frustrated.

Anyway, if you found you have to actually turn off your antivirus program
just to use your computer, at any time, that sounds awful. But if you mean
while it's running a real scan, well, this AVG Free Edition user wouldn't
recommend even trying to work while that's happening. But I've heard others
say that this doesn't happen to them on their machines, it's only fair to
mention..

Hi, I use AVG Free, and I don't notice any slowdowns when using any
programme, never mind Word or Office for that matter. Hope that helps.

Hi again,

I am wondering what anti-virus program others are using who are having
this same problem of JAWS slowing down in Word. I am using the latest
update of NOD32 and I just shut off the spyware protection, since I also
use SpySweeper anyway, and now things are working better with JAWS when
typing in Word, so far at least!

   Feedback, please!

Hi Don.

It's really strange, but when I open what I know to be a long document I
can only read a few lines. However, if I do a search for something I
know to be towards the end of the document, I find it no problems.

Hi Ron,

You are right about the Windows Updates. However, after I received
the replies from Chris and Allan, I decided to download the setup file
for Office Service Pack 3 and, when I tried to run that setup file, as I
expected, it told me that I already had that installed.

Hi all.

I also have an issue with Jaws and Microsoft Word 2003 edition.

When I open a document the machine says co, but there is nothing on the screen. Then after typing for a few minutes, I cannot read what I have
written.

As for the microsoft updates, don't these come automatically with
Windows updates?

Don, I suggest you check for the latest updates to Office. Service
Pack 3 has been released, so you should update to that if possible.
Hope that helps.

Subject: JAWS slowing down in Word

Hi,

If I start typing in a Microsoft Word document, JAWS works fine
at first. However, after I have been typing for about 6 or 7 lines,
JAWS slows down. What I mean is that JAWS is very slow to report
each character I type. If I stop for a few moments, then it seems
all right, but then JAWS starts slowing down again. I can also hear
the hard drive winding, so something is happening.

This only happens with Microsoft Word and I am using Word 2003,
Windows XP (home) and JAWS 8.0; it does not happen when I am typing
an Outlook Express message and it doesn't happen when I am typing a
WordPad document.

I tried shutting down both my anti-virus program and my
anti-spyware program, but that didn't make any difference.

   Can anyone help?
