Hi again Chip and Chris,

Here is the reply I just received from my buddy regarding this issue on a Vista machine:

Don:

As far as I can tell, the conclusion that we reached during our telephone conversation is correct. In otherwards, one would still have to alter the JFW.ini file to force JAWS to use a particular soundcard unless, of course, that particular card was the default soundcard.

Cheers.

Hi Chip and Chris,

I just checked with a buddy of mine who uses JAWS with Vista at work, but he uses XP at home. So he is going to check it out on Monday. I'll let you know what he finds then.

Hello Chip.

I don't think this is needed in Windows Vista considering the fact that Jaws
for Windows actually reloads itself once the user logs in. I think under
Windows vista all you need to do is select the sound card that you want to be used in the sound control for the Jaws application. Anyone feel free to
correct me if I am wrong.

I hope this helps.

Don,

do you know if this works, or is possible, under vista?

thanks.

Hi Mitch,

Sorry I'm so late replying, but I had surgery last week
and was in
hospital for 5 days. I am just now getting caught up with my E-mail.

The process of forcing JAWS to choose a particular
soundcard in XP goes
as
follows:

1. Open the Control Pannel.

2. Cursor to, and open the "sounds and audio devices."

3. Control-Tab to the audio tab.

4. In the first selection in that tab, which is the playback
device, select
as default the card on which you wish to load JAWS.

5. Virtualize the current window by pressing insert-control-w.

6. Cursor down to the device which was chosen in step four.

7. press shift-DownArrow to select that line.

8. Press Control-c to copy the line to the clipboard.

9. press escape to close the virtualized window.

10. press Alt-F4 until you get to the desktop.

11. Locate and open the JFW.INI file located in c:\program
files\Freedom
Scientific\Jaws\10.0.

12. In the JFW.INI file, insert a blank line after the
statement which
reads: Synth1Driver =.........

13. Cursor up to the blank line which you created.

14. type the following: Synth1Port=

15. Directly to the right of the equal sign, press Control-V
to insert the
contents of the clipboard which you created in step 8.

16. Press Control-S to save the file.

17. On-load and re-load JAWS.

That should do it.

    Hope this helps,

    Don
