Hi Mitch,

Sorry I'm so late replying, but I had surgery last week and was in hospital for 5 days. I am just now getting caught up with my E-mail.

The process of forcing JAWS to choose a particular soundcard in XP goes as
follows:

1. Open the Control Pannel.

2. Cursor to, and open the "sounds and audio devices."

3. Control-Tab to the audio tab.

4. In the first selection in that tab, which is the playback device, select
as default the card on which you wish to load JAWS.

5. Virtualize the current window by pressing insert-control-w.

6. Cursor down to the device which was chosen in step four.

7. press shift-DownArrow to select that line.

8. Press Control-c to copy the line to the clipboard.

9. press escape to close the virtualized window.

10. press Alt-F4 until you get to the desktop.

11. Locate and open the JFW.INI file located in c:\program files\Freedom
Scientific\Jaws\10.0.

12. In the JFW.INI file, insert a blank line after the statement which
reads: Synth1Driver =.........

13. Cursor up to the blank line which you created.

14. type the following: Synth1Port=

15. Directly to the right of the equal sign, press Control-V to insert the
contents of the clipboard which you created in step 8.

16. Press Control-S to save the file.

17. On-load and re-load JAWS.

That should do it.

   Hope this helps,

   Don

Hi Don, Sorry to intrude again but I have another question about your fix
and the INI file.
Listed below are my 2 sound cards as described in the Sounds and Speech
manager exactly as they appear including spaces and upper case where
appropriate, etc:

Vinyl AC'97 Audio (Wave)

SB Audigy 2 Audio [D400]

How would these appear in a correct format if they were to replace the sound
card example in your sample line?
No rush as I am dealing with speech through one set for now. Incidentally,
if I play with the Audio settings in the Sounds and Speech manager, I can
reverse which set of speakers carries the sounds but it is still doubled and
I cannot force the previous separation, if that makes sense. Thanks very
much, Mitch

Hi Mitch,

In order to have JAWS running off the on-board sound card (in my case,
the RealTech sound card) instead of the external card, (in my case, the
SoundBlaster Odygy), you must insert the following line into the jfw.ini
file of the JAWS version you are using:

Synth1Port=Realtek HD Audio rear output

This line must be inserted in the new jfw.ini file each time you upgrade to
a new version of JAWS; otherwise, JAWS will run off the external card just
like everything else on your PC. The line should be inserted just above the
first line that starts with Synth2. The path for the jfw.ini file for JAWS
10.0 is:

C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\10.0\jfw.ini

   Hope this helps,

   Don

Subject: JAWS 10 Beta & 2 Sound Cards

Hi, The beta seems to have disrupted the sound separation of my 2 sound
cards as now all the sounds come through one set of speakers.
I have tried without success to correct this in the Sounds and Speech
manager. I also seem to recall faintly about having to do some kind of
manipulation of files for the 2 sound cards to work independently.
I would appreciate a reeducation on this if others with 2 sound cards are
having similar results with the beta 10. Thanks, Mitch
