Re: AVG, a lovable system resources hog (was:Can Jaws slow down your computer?)

Interesting. As I gather from a couple of responses, it's AVG being a
system hog, interfering with computer response overall during its scan. As
others say, schedule this scan to run when the computer is idle, and it's no
problem. Also, I looked more carefully this morning at what's happening,
and it isn't only the Jaws response that's being slowed down. In fact, I
think I was mostly wrong to describe the problem as just being a slowdown of
Jaws. For instance, AVG was in the midst of its scan a couple of minutes
ago and apparently in one of the phases of a couple of minutes where its
resources use is especially heavy, when I punched the hotkey combination I
use to launch Outlook Express.

Well, I guess I hadn't been paying close enough attention at times like
this. As I mentioned, I'm partially sighted in such a way that even though
I can't read what's on the screen, I can generally see the patterns of the
activity on it. And it took quite a few seconds for Outlook Express to
launch, a really long wait, and once my usual main Outlook Express starting
screen came up (the view with the folders on the left, as in Windows
Explorer, and the Inbox contents on the right), it only took another long
second or two for Jaws to announce the action. But just the lag time of OE
launching was considerable. If I couldn't see the screen at all, I'd think
nothing was happening, or that I'd pressed the wrong keys.

So, let's let Eloquence off the hook on this one. AVG is simply slowing
down the computer, altogether.

But I still love it. Why? It's free, it apparently keeps me safe, and low
maintenance. Good enough for me.

hey have recently upgraded from 512 to 1 gig of ram and i noticed no
difference in the slightest.

i thought the pc would run a bit faster and smoother but it didn't make any
difference.

i also have macafee installed which when i look in the task manager it is
using around 33 mb which is around half of what jfw uses.

when macafee does a scan whether it be manual or scheduled i can use the pc
as normal with nothing being affected and especially not the use of jaws.
