Well Yardbird,
I usually don't bother to track things that close either.
I had some spy ware on my previous computer which would just flat suck up
all of the resources available. I believe it was something like "modsync" or
"mopsync". It claimed to be synchronizing something or other.
When the system seems to be running slow I usually go to the task manager
and see what percentage of system resources are available.
If the number is below about 70% I do want to know what is hogging my
processor.
I happen to have a HP computer and HP seems to want to run about 76 jillion
little programs whose function is a complete mystery to me. (LOL)
JAWS does, however, run very, very well on this HP computer and I do like
the USB Triple Talk.

cy,
Well, I get what you're saying, but it's generally over my head. I don't go
in and track the system resources usage of everything like you do. I
generally don't have any problems or frustrations, either, with my
relatively new Dell PC with 512 Mb RAM. Now, before someone says you just
have to have at least twice that, especially with Jaws, I want to say that
this, and only this situation, with AVG, provides any evidence that there's
any weakness in my system in this way. It's the only time I have any hangup
of any kind that matters as this does.

So, thanks for the thorough explanation, but I'll just go on bearing with
AVG so long as it's doing a fine job and I don't have any earth-shakingly
time-sensitive work to do on the machine while it's running.

Well, I have noticed that Explorer is gobbling up quite a few cycpes when
AVG does its thing.
I believe I have been told that Explorer actually does the file look up for
AVG?
Now, as for Elequence, any software synthesizer would consume more cycles
than the hardware synthesizers such as DEC or Triple Talk.
In the old days whith processors below 1 ghz Eloquence did slow down the
works. The speech was also not nearly as good as it is today.
When I got my first processor faster than 1 ghz the quality of speech made
agigantic improvement.
With my current processor which is one of the AMD 64 bit jobbies it does not
seem to matter that much.
Does this help?

cy,

why are you mentioning Windows Explorer? I don't necessarily have Windows
Explorer running while AVG is doing its scan. I don't usually have much
running at all, except OE and maybe IE.

As for the second thing, I guess you changed the subject and are suggesting
that Eloquence may be more troublesome in a situation like this than another
type of synth?

Just trying to clarify.

Yes,
I have noticed that the system does run a little slower when AVG is doing
its thing. It is actually Windows Explorer which is consuming most of the
resources.
Were I using Eloquence I think I would see a little more slow down but I am
using Triple Talk.

Cy,
I'm a longtime user of AVG Free Edition, and I certainly haven't had any
virus hassles all this time, and I'm not about to try another such program.
But I have to say that while it's running its morning scan of my hard drive,
which takes it more than 25 minutes, it slows down things just terribly.
I'm partially sighted, so I can see that things on the screen are responding
more or less normally to commands I may key in, and I suspect that if I'm
typing an email or something that my typing is also appearing on the screen
as it should. But Jaws is really crippled by having to operate at this
time. I press a key, and it may be 20 seconds before Jaws speaks what I've
just done, whether it's a letter I've typed or a control key I've pressed to
execute something.

as soon as AVG finishes its scan, it puts up a closing dialogue that reports
the scan's activities and results, and allows me to close the dialogue if I
don't want to wait 30 seconds for it to close itself. I generally close it
so I can go on using the computer immediately without that dialogue getting
in Jaws's way or my accidentally hitting a key that activates some control
in the dialogue and screws things up.

Anyway, I've learned to just go make another cup of coffee and listen to
some radio news during this time, and I can live with that. But just to
chime in. and of course, this isn't about Jaws itself slowing down things,
so I'll change the subject line.

How can I test if it is Norton without getting a virus in the process of no
antivirus software?

Well, my immediate reaction is to suggest that you replace Norton with
something good that'll actually get the job done and not cost you so much in
the performance department, but I understand that might not be a viable
option for you. At which point, I'm afraid, you're out of luck.
