Thanks for the suggestion but I don't think that this is the reason - adjusting brightness/contrast don't seem to improve the appearance, and no other elements on the display seem to be affected. All horizontal sections of the displayed system font characters seem to be of the original weight, but the vertical sections are heavier/broader.
