I think that the Gateway should be set to the IP address of your
router here.
ie  192.168.1.1

Not if he is using DHCP in which case it should(Must?) be blank.

Erm yes, but in this case he states that he is not using DHCP but is entering all of the details manually. In which case the Gateway must not be left blank.




The netmask looks odd too, should it not be 255.255.255.0 ?

248 is still valid if all other devices have an address with the last digit less than 8, Niklaus has empirically proved this as his RiscPC will work with same addresses! (And he doesn't ever connect both at the same time as
he doesn't yet have a hub or switch)

Okay, so that should not be a problem.
