Hai linux geeks,
Geeks :O there are lotsa newbies and novices hanging around here, do not
pressume so. You are most welcome to join the community :)
This is Subash, and am a newbie to Linux (and ILUGC). It's been almost 8
years of Windows reign, and I've finally decided to break the prison.
Good, welcome to the world of 'Freedom' ! :)
I am a new-recruit programmer at American Int'l Group (AIG), and will be
buying a laptop soon. But I'm too much confused:
Which architecture to choose? Intel Centrino, or AMD64 (Turion)? Which one is
best supported by Linux? (I did hear rumors that AMD64 causes problems on
most distros)
When I bought a laptop, I chose the best one which I prefer, Whatever it
is, there will be one distro that will satisfy your needs. :) So, go and
buy what u prefer. Intel Centrino is what i have, and i suggest, but I
am not very much AMD literate.
Which distro? SUSE, Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora? And where to get that in
Chennai?
I shall be using my Tux machine for development in J2EE, OpenLaszlo & Perl,
with Apache running around. Yeah, and also for office, multimedia and the
internet.
First, the choice of distro is something a personal preference. I
suggest Ubuntu Dapper, because it is the coolest distro on earth as of
now. There may be other things too, but many of us have been running
dapper in our lappy's and very much satisfied by it. If you have any
trouble, we are here to help :)
Any advice from the linux gurus here would be greatly appreciated, as I am in
a great dilemma. Plz send your suggestions to: sjsubbi@xxxxxxxxx
We always prefer a open discussion, so let the suggestions be in the
list. Not all of us are gurus, but still have wide varying experiences.
You can treat as your friends, and free to ask questions.
There are certain mailing rules which you are expected to follow, if
not, will be intimated immediately by our quick-responsive members :D
Note :
1. Threads about distros and things like favourite softwares, favourite
programming languages are known to start 'Flame Wars'
2. Before asking any question, try to do some google, try something
based on the results and then post when you find no clue out.
3. Donot copy the entire contents of logs and other outputs here. Rather
paste them to pastebin.de and just give the links in your mail.
4. Try to have a easily understandable and relevant title for your
posts, which will help us.
Hope, someone will give you the common mailing list guidelines which
will help you know better. Otherwise, learning through experience is
always there ;)
