Which architecture to choose?
My thoughts below:
First thing you should choose is the laptop screen
size that you want. The bigger the screen, greater is
the battery size, and greater the weight. Depending on
how fit you are, you might choose between light-weight
or heavy laptops.
Intel Centrino, or
AMD64 (Turion)? Which one is best supported by
Linux? (I did hear rumors that AMD64 causes problems
on most distros)
Never tried AMD64, but, you can browse here:

You can also google for HOWTOs or tutorials by people
who have installed x distribution on y laptop, or
simply GNU/Linux on y laptop.
Which distro? SUSE, Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora?
Choice of distro is a personal preference. I'd
recommend any recent distro.
