Excellent choice ! At the end of the day however, the people who do want to
subvert this sharing, will probably just go ahead and do it anyways. The
onus would be on you to prove that they did so (just take a look at
gpl-violations.org for examples of how even big companies rip off the
efforts of developers without any acknowledgment). However, at least by
using something like GPL you expressively make it /illegal/ and not just
/immoral/ to not share modifications.

I am a developer, I never care about public domain. I want to write code
for me and my community.
I use to talk about lots of persons from street shopkeeper to someone well
educated sitting in AC room. Most of them do not care about Linux and
its philosophy of freedom. Same with companies. For example, in Delhi, you
can find 'N' number of Companies who work and get earning from "setting up
Drupal CMS", They never contributed back Drupal. When you release any good
in public domain, public will try to harness in negative manner. so I follow
GPL because, GPL is made by a hacker for hacker community so that software
will remain with hacker community at the same time it can be used by public.
See, Proprietary Software always comes first, but always the winner is free
software.
GPL has patent clauses too. GPL is a well engineered license for software.
PS: I even know a company from a close, who actually made modification in
Linux kernel and selling them into their switch and router. See, Company
only want to make profit at any cost. They never care about GPL and freedom.
So why should we write a software under 'near public domain'
