I know one reason, the java script supported by both the browsers
differ. The basic java script does work in all browsers but not
everything works the same way, and some don't work at all! Thats the
reason you see a little exclamatory mark which says 'error' in your
status bar when you open some web pages.. because your browser
couldn't parse the java script that the web server gave it.
This can be avoided if the web developers check for the browser type
in the HTTP fields, and send appropriate java script to your browser..
but am sure you guessed the problem :) .. the developer has the
rewrite the same functionality for each browser type.. and worst of
all the same functionality may not be possible in all browsers... so
they prefer to stick to the popular browser used :) .. which is IE
These days web has advanced and people use terms like AJAX (I have no
clue what it means) .. and maybe more newer terms.. so thats like
making the discrepancies higher ..
