Is this a trick question? :)
You didn't specify POP or IMAP.
For a GUI environment:
1. IMAP only, I would wager the web browser, open standards based, as
the most versatile MUA. Many service providers have integrated email
and other features into the UI within the browser. Being server based,
adding features is easier.
2. IMAP/POP - on the Linux desktop, I use Kontact (KMail plus more). It
has all the features I need including RSS feeds.
On the Linux console, mutt.
