Instead of trying to connect several independent pieces of software, I
suggest you go for the full Courier suite. It supports virtual
mailboxes via a number of different authentication methods (flat
files, mysql/postgresql databases, ldap etc.) and comes with an
integrated pop/imap server and webmail system (requires apache).
my recommendation is courier imap + postfix

I also want to set up a mailserver with virtual mailboxes. The variety of
software available and their functionality are highly confusing. For example
what does exim, courier, dovecot, postfix, sendmail, squirellmail all do?
I've seen a combination of them being suggested. I for one want to set up a
local mailserver, where ease of installation, maintenance and use have a
higher priority over security. Can somebody give a brief note on the various
software animals that roam the mailserver jungle? Or a pointer to a web
source? (to be frank I don't know the right search string)
