Have you tried the graphical version of elinks? Or w3m?
They are text mode browsers that can also display images if run from an
xterm. I know it does not apply to your case.
lynx looks a bit outdated though it has its ecological niche as well.
You can do background downloads and command line dump of URLs.
In fact Perls' CPAN module uses lynx precisely for that.
I stopped using text mode browsers a long time ago since I can always
figure out how to run X on pretty much any modern hardware.
X has also improved. And the fact that LCD monitors aren't that messy.
That said text mode is cool. ;)
