Actually, we should aim at getting laptops running
GNU/Linux for _everyone_.
In US universities, each and every student owns a
laptop, which they bring to class, take notes with it,
do their homework with it. They work on it in the
outdoors, in the labs, in the classrooms, just
anywhere on/off-campus. Of course, you have a laptop
which you used during your under-graduate study in
college. But, how many people can afford this? Like
how mobile phones are owned by every individual,
laptops should be owned by every one in India. When
will this happen?
There are now portable systems in India, like mobilis,
that cost about Rs.10,000/-? But again how many
people can afford that in rural places? If we have to
take technology to every nook and corner of the world,
hardware prices should come down. Brazil, a happening
place for GNU/Linux, has a tie-up with Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge on bringing a
USD100 (INR 5,000) laptop, of course, running
GNU/Linux.

There are so many schools and colleges who still do
paper-work. It is extrememly simply to setup a network
running GNU/Linux machines and do all their
administration, communication etc. at an economical
price. People are just ignorant.
