Linux-based projects (part of them using only open source tools, rest mainly
java-based) have been done by many students. Some of the colleges have
developed open source based applications and are using them in-house. In
most the cases, there are HoDs/Lecturers who are enthusiastic and
knowledgeable enough to assist the students.
We can talk to the HOD concerned (and other HoD), offer them project ideas,
provide mentor support. Already, the teacher group which came for NRCFOSS
training programs have given various project titles. Kenneth is driving the

Many students start thinking about the project in october, contact companies
in november, start reading / learning in december and work only for one
month, viz. Jan. Thereafter, they have to come back to colleges for theory
courses and project documentation. Even if they have 3 months, it is not
sufficient. [Some of my students had divided the project into 2 parts :
first part was presented as project report for the Anna Univ exam, after
their exams they went to the company and completed the project during
May-Jun-Jul. At AU-KBC a couple of groups of students have done in a similar
way. In Muthayammal College, the lectuer - Ms. Krishnaveni -- has got a
group of students who have just completed the degree willing to work on FOSS
projects].
We are now advising the lecturers to identify 1-2 student group per college,
give them project ideas and reference materials in Jul-Aug, so that they
could work in earnest during Nov-Jan. Our portal could be used as wiki /
repository, provided there is interest from students. Am willing to be in
touch with the concerned colleges/HoDs/Lectures to push the thing thru.
Whenever LUG/NRCFOSS visit the colleges, we can offer our assistance in this
regard.
