oops.. sorry.. RPM was not supported by default by Debian.. you need alien
to bypass the Debian package system.. follow senthil's mail.. it will work.

Hi pushparajan, he has clearly stated that he is using Debian 3.1, but
you have given a link to an rpm :-S

AFAIK in Debian if you do a apt-get install xmms the mp3 plugin also
comes in handy and ready to use. So there is no need for the plugin
installation explicitly.

Also if he is able to play the audio file as root and not in the case
of the user he has created after installation, then it is related to
permissions to the /dev/dsp. I was stuck with this problem quite a
number of times in Debian.

The simple thing which I could do for the above is

$ su chmod 777 /dev/dsp

Then try playing the audio files in xmms.
