Check if you can play sound as root, if you can then the group
privileges are not correct. You need to add yourself to the 'audio'
group. man usermod.
If you are using GNOME there's an easier way, from the gnome panel, go
to Desktop > Administration > 'Users and Groups'. Then select the
username for which sound is not playing and choose 'Properties'. Then
select the 'User privileges' tab and select the ones you want enabled
for that username.
Logout and login again, and try playing sound.
