[Ilugc] In PDF showing only Black boxes instead of images

You need to ask if the author is willing to provide the text source of
the book. I didn't see that in your e-mail to Gary.
It looks like the author himself wants to re-generate the PDF using
LaTeX. Fair enough.
I think he himself wants to regenerate the pdf. But I am not an expert
in tex to give a support. It would be nice if we can assist him. I am
not sure about bringing him to this group. I used IDEs like tex-maker.
But not confident to trouble shoot if something go wrong.
