Dear all,
Mr.Umashankar, MD, ELCOT during our last meet agreed to host our
weekly GLV sessions in his office. We expect good number of their
staff also participate. We promised him to start a beginners session,
so that their staff also benefit.
Accordingly I am proposing the plan as follows:
(Normal duration 1-1/2 hours to 2 hours)
Session: 1. Introduction to FOSS
Installation of Linux.

GUI - KDE,GNOME and other desktops/window managers
- Common applications like Openoffice, Firefox etc
Session: 2. Basics of Linux - Users, file permission,
file system,
important files like passwd,
group etc
Command line interface - some important
commands, simple shell scripts
Session: 3. Installation of packages - rpm, source code, deb etc
Basic functions : copying files to floppy/cdrom/
pendrive etc. Burning cds
Setting up system setting/resources
using
KDE/gnome control centre, webmin etc
Session: 4. Introduction to Apache
Session: 5. Introduction to scripting language - any one of
perl/python/php
Session: 6. Introduction to MySQL/Postgres (Any one)
Session: 7. Introduction to Desktop GUI development 1 - GTk/Qt (Any
one)
Session: 8. Linux Networking - basics, NFS,NIS, Firewall ...
Note: The above plan is for two months. Additional session for

Under session 5,6,7 whoever volunteers first will decide the
language/database/tool to teach.
