I am trying to configure a local domain pulsars.lan and resolve names
like linux05.pulsars.lan, mg-laptop.pulsars.lan etc.
My configuration files are at
* /etc/bind/named.conf - http://dpaste.com/hold/40126/
* /etc/bind/named.conf.options - http://dpaste.com/hold/40127/
* /etc/bind/named.conf.local - a file with 5 lines of text but all
commented out with //
* /etc/bind/db.pulsars.lan.hosts &
/etc/bind/db.0.168.192.hosts - http://dpaste.com/hold/40129/
Your files from dpaste.com
#/etc/bind/db.pulsars.lan.hosts^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ??
$ttl 38400
pulsars.lan. IN SOA linux05.pulsars. ganesh.pulsars.com. (
1205946469
your domain is linux05.pulsars. or pulsars.lan?
Suggest a method for serial no. like YYYYMMDDxx eg. 2008031901 this not
only gives you an idea when the file was updated but it is also an
increasing no on the time scale. If you are doing master/slave this is
important for zone transfers.
In the same file
pulsars.lan. IN NS linux05.pulsars.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ??
your domain is linux05.pulsars. or pulsars.lan?
linux05.pulsars.lan. IN A 192.168.0.71
mg-laptop.pulsars.lan. IN A 192.168.0.104
Not necessary to repeat the domain part for each host. You have already
done it on the SOA declaration.
#/etc/bind/db.0.168.192.hosts^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
$ttl 38400
0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN SOA linux05.pulsars.
ganesh.pulsars.com. (
your domain is linux05.pulsars. or pulsars.lan?
1205947032see comment on serial no.
0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN NS linux05.pulsars.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
your domain is linux05.pulsars. or pulsars.lan?
71.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR linux05.pulsars.lan.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
104.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR mg-laptop.pulsars.lan.
This is the first time I have seen this format. Usually the Network
No./IP no. is sufficient i.e. no in-addr.arpa. string.
* /etc/resolv.conf - two lines (search pulsars nameserveryour domain is pulsars. or pulsars.lan?
192.168.0.71)
Suggest you first fix these and then report back your results.
Search the 'Net for basic BIND config tutorials. This is a good place
to start <http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html>
BTW I used webmin to do all this setup.
Sys Admin 101 - learn the basic configs of any service you want to
deploy and not really 100% on front end tools.
