Huh? Microsoft and porn? This is the silliest comparison I have seen. For
your information, proprietary tools are used by a majority of the world's
computing population today, whatever be the merits of open source. Our
syllabi are full of proprietary tools - we use them in our labs, everywhere.
Do you want people to stop studying about the Intel 8086 processor now since
its from Intel?
Lets not be blinded to the true motive of greedy
corporations.
Like Prabhu said in his reply, every company wants to make money.Period. If
they don't , then they betray the trust of their shareholders and other
people involved with the company. How did wanting to make money ever become
evil (as people don't want any corporations involved with academics at all)?
If you have good basic skills and fundamentals picking any
supposedly "Industry Tool" is just matter of couple of weeks.

Though the article is mostly about Windows(he does talk about free software
too) , the argument could be easily extended to any programming platform out
there ..be it Gnome or XUL or whatever.
