That was it, of course. I guess I didn't see it at first, because I didn't
compare it with the old machine's display, where it clearly shows the
existence of the extended partition.
I think Alex is right, though, that the interface could use some work.
The error alert wasn't the least helpful for a start, and I would never
have noticed the "Extended Partition' creation option -- which of
course wasn't there anyway!
Not sure what the best solution would be, but maybe it shouldn't be
done with menus. Perhaps a control panel indicating the likely sequence,
with liberal context help as needed.
