Actually, it was always planned that we also support actual bitmap icons; it just never happened so far (you know, priorities :-)).

Not like this, but yes, you can extract the data using catattr (you'll have to use its raw mode to achieve that, something like "catattr --raw BEOS:ICON filename > filename.hvif").

From a Haiku host, it would be relatively simple to extract those automatically, from a package -- at least when there is just one, it wouldn't even have to guess.
I don't know if HDS can parse packages on that level, though.
