Mystery solved, I think. There are a few of my apps that are showing icons. I'd
have to double-check but this does make sense.
EDIT: Yes, I checked and those of my apps that display icons in Haikudepot also
offer an HFIV download in the web app. Elementary, my dear Watson.
OK, I don't think it is realistic to ask the devs to change this policy. They
are committed to the HVIF format and they probably wish all bitmap icons would
just go away and die..
But now we have some consequences.
1. I suggest that in the web app you insert a notice to this effect; "You are
welcome to use PNG images, but please note that these will only only show in
the web app, not in the HaikuDepot app." That will stop others from wasting
time.
2. Adding icons to all my apps has just fallen in my priority list from #1 to
somewhere around #20. I'll keep on checking my apps for categories and
screenshots, but icons will just have to wait. It really is a very
time-consuming business. I like the web app, but let's face it, it is a
secondary interface. I have to concentrate my resources on the first thing the
new Haiku user sees and that is the Haikudepot app. Sorry.
3. up to 90% of the apps on my repo are old BeOS apps. Their icons are part of
their history, not to be replaced by random vector icons. If some kind soul
wants to recreate around 4-500 old BeOS icons into HVIF format, I accept your
offer. Zip them up and send them to me. Even better, ask Andrew to activate
your account and you can add the icons there yourself.
4. Haiku's Icon-O-Matic is the ONE app on Haiku that makes me want to put my
fist through the monitor. Several times now I have sat down, printout with
instructions on the desk and Icon-O-Matic on the screen, trying to make
something - ANYTHING AT ALL - show up in the editing area. Vector graphics and
me just don't get along. The few apps with HVIF icons that I have (mostly
stubloaders for Java apps) are converted from SVGs. Sadly, I didn't save
separate HVIF files while I was doing that and searching for the original SVG
is likely to take far too much time.
I'll see what I can do, but ... priorities.
Hmm, will "catattr blablabla filename > filename.hvif" extract the icon from an
app? Anyone?
