 No 1) might be a matter of a fine-tuned algorithm. You'd have to average
 over a long enough distance if the pointer doesn't leave a 360/8=45°
 corridor for to long. Doesn't sound impossible to me (pfft amateur :) ).
 Normally, I'd expect a tablet user to be esp. apt at drawing a rather
 straight line.

 No 2): After the direction in 1) was determined, only the border/corner in
 that direction is moved. So, if that initial direction was down, you'll
 move only the bottom border when moving up and down (left and right are
 ignored), until you release the mouse button.
