Hey all -- I also have a question about spyware blaster and spybot. I installed spybot on my system and ran it and it found some things, then I immunized my computer, which allegedly plugs little holes in internet explorer and other apps, but there is still the concern as to what exactly it is doing, and whether spybot itself is installing anything I don't want. Case in point, whenever I start up spybot, I always get a message saying that I should not remove a certain piece of adware from my system or else spybot may not work properly. Well, what if I don't want it there? And what all does it do? I suppose it's good it says something, but it doesn't give enough info, and really, you can be paranoid about any program, including spyware removers. Actually there are a lot of such programs out there. It is quite interesting. But who knows which ones are good or safe or whatever. Also, I got spybot only because someone said it was accessible, and it is on the jfwlite page. But it is still hard or even very difficult to use with jaws. For example, it color codes the very malicious vs the harmless vs the uncertain programs and log files and registry entries etc, but even though there is a "blinduser" mode, which is turned on automatically if you have a screen reader running, it simply doesn't speak these attributes. And there is no other indication but color -- and I can't get the list except in a text file in notepad, in which case the color attribute has been removed. If anyone knows how to work around this, please advise. But I believe there is something running that was not caught by spybot, as there is a strange connection in my TCP log. Maybe nothing, but I can't figure it out. Anyway, I hate worrying about security... but it's a necessary evil if you don't want a lot of junk on your system. Take care. --le ----- Original Message ----- From: <gerald.g.weichbrodt@xxxxxx> To: <guispeak@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2005 7:26 AM Subject: [guispeak] SpySweeper All this talk about Kim Komando's tips reminds me: She seems to be pretty enthusiastic about an anti-spyware application called SpySweeper. She says it has the virtue of both being able to irradicate spyware it finds on your computer and putting some protection in place to keep the stuff from parking itself on your computer in the first place. The program isn't free, but folks can get two years of coverage for the price of one at www.komando.com. I tried their free scanning tool, and it reported some nasties living on my computer at home. I guess that's a good sign--that they really do detect suspicious software residing on one's computer. Has anybody on the list actually tried SpySweeper with speech and seen how usable it is? I have tried AdAware from Lavasoft previously, but the program scared me a bit. I had trouble deciphering the screen, and I found myself getting overwhelmed by the rather obscure options available in the program (not to mention that I found them hard to adjust with speech). I might be interested in SpySweeper if I felt I could operate it and that it was comprehensible enough that I would feel like I was in control of it rather than the other way round. Thanks for any comments on SpySweeper accessibility and usability.
