Did you try finding out what the caret is and telling jaws to track it?

I tested it with JAWS; did not test with Window-Eyes but could have.  Text
was invisible.  This computer sometimes exhibits weird behavior, i.e., a
web site which works fine on other computers displays 'no links' on this
one.  So the fact that something doesn't work here may prove nothing.
